About
My 12th Christmas marked the arrival of my first computer, a VIC-20. By 15 I was writing paid-for software and it was clear that my career was set for at least some period of time. At 21 I’d got my Comp Sci degree and entered full-time work, focusing on real-time systems, operating systems, networks and distributed systems. Way back in 1999 I co-founded a startup company developing infrastructure to make systems evolution largely automatic and pain free, a worthy goal and one we made progress towards. The company failed because of the challenges of running a company rather than anything technological and whilst it lasted until 2006, I quit in 2003.
On leaving, I chose to consult, specializing in the design and construction of distributed, grid and networked systems. During that time I began work on Blitz, an opensource JavaSpaces implementation.
In December 2004, I received the Jini Contributors Award. I was elected in December of 2005 to the General House of the Jini Technical Oversight Committee and became an active committer on the Apache River project (something I’ve since stepped back from).
I’ve been credited by Sleepycat Software for being a leading community advisor/developer on their Db products.
I am currently CTO at Sporting Index where I am responsible for all software development, infrastructure and operational teams. I also have a specific responsibility for the architecture and implementation of the trading systems underpinning SPIN’s website. Previously I’ve been an Architect and Technical Manager at Betfair.
I’m also a petrolhead, martial artist, runner and audiophile there is, after all, more to life than tech! I can be contacted on the obvious dotted name at gmail dot com.
